DEADPOOL: This is What Awesome Looks Like

After disappearing from Xbox Live, PSN, Steam and store shelves two years ago due to an expired licensing contract between Marvel and Activision, the “Merc with a Mouth” is back. One of Marvel’s most tongue-in-cheek characters, Deadpool, makes his glorious debut on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One—just in time before his big movie premier this February.

In this third-person, action-shooter HD version of the game, you’ll follow the much-loved anti-hero on an adventure that will take you through some of the less-well travelled corners of the Marvel Universe. Former Deadpool comic writer Daniel Way in conjunction with developer High Moon Studios writes the script for this game’s hilarious story. The game starts out with Deadpool threatening the employees of High Moon Studios and forcing them to make “the most awesome game ever”. It’s not hard to guess who the star of the game is—none other than Deadpool himself.

If you missed Deadpool on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 come find out why you should play this game based on a Canadian anti-hero.

The Good

Fan will be happy to know that High Moon Studios have nailed all the characteristics of Deadpool that make him so intriguing. His constant stream of one-liners, rude and crude humour, and his inability to take danger seriously are present for you to enjoy. Nolan North voices Deadpool and absolutely hits the nail on the head with Deadpool’s unique sense of humour and crude language. Deadpool will keep you laughing pretty much throughout the entire game and keep you wondering what he will say or do next. For instance, as you’re exploring Deadpool’s apartment you’ll come across the bathroom; what you see and do in there is nothing short of hilarious and will make your jaw drop.

The story is kept moving by the absolute ridiculous situations that Deadpool finds himself in. Whether Deadpool is launching himself around in a giant foot-turret, or hamming it up with the other characters on screen there is never a dull moment in the game. Some of my personal favourite moments of the game include Deadpool making personal calls to High Moon Studios during the game to complain about bugs and tropes.

Activision have included the two challenge mode DLC maps, GRT Plaza and Inside the Tower that can be played in both Challenge Mode and Infinite Mode. In addition two new costumes: My D-Pooly and Uncanny X-Force are included and can be used in the games Infinite Mode.

The visuals in Deadpool although not earthshattering, have received an upgrade over the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In line with the PC version, the graphics are sharper thanks to the upgraded 1080p resolution, and the framerate now remains smooth. In turn, this makes the multitude of platforming sections in the game easy to control and onscreen mayhem during battle never slows down.

The Bad

With the recent rise in popularity of HD remasters such as The Last of Us, Tomb Raider, God of War III and the fabulously done Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, Deadpool is void of any additional features that the afore mentioned games provide. The stand out HD remaster is Uncharted: The Nathan Drake collection, in my review I discuss the upgrades and features that Bluepoint Games include that made the game a must buy. Unfortunately, Deadpool appears to be a port of the PC version rather than a true HD remaster or an entirely new game that many fans have been clamouring for.

Final thoughts

If you have already played Deadpool on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, you’re probably wondering if it’s worth playing the game again on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Without a doubt, I can honestly recommend this game to anyone that has played it before on previous generation consoles.

For a game that is 2 ½ years old, Deadpool holds up remarkably well. The increased resolution and frame rate ensure that Deadpool looks great on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. High Moon Studios, Activision, and Nolan North have done an outstanding job of capturing the true essence of Deadpool that fans will appreciate.

Although not a brand new game, Deadpool on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will satisfy the most avid fan’s desire for all things Deadpool until the movie is released in February
